Multimedia Communication Systems: Upper Layers in the OSI Reference Model
نویسندگان
چکیده
Future multimedia systems will rely on broadband networks and subnetworks which will be able to provide the required type of communication services and will meet the stringent quality of service (QOS) demands. However, it is likely that the introduction of multimedia communication will have to he based on networks providing simple services that are not directly meeting the multimedia requirements. This paper starts from this assumption and focuses on the end systems. Within the framework of the OS1 Reference Model, it examines the functionality and structuring of the higher protocol layers required to support multimedia communication. Furthermore, it discusses some important implementation and performance issues.

An Implementation of the OSI Upper Layers and Applications
1 Abstract Above the transport layer, the open systems interconnection (OSI) basic reference model describes several application standards supported by a common upper layer protocol stack. Digital's high-performance implementation of the upper layers of the protocol stack concentrates on maximizing data throughput while minimizing connection establishment delay. An additional benefit derived fr...
متن کاملMultimedia Synchronization Protocols for Broadband Integrated Services
Synchronization of multiple data streams in time has been recognized as a significant requirement of future multimedia applications utilizing broadband communication technology. Although this requirement has been approached for such single channel media as packetized audio and video, a general solution has not been identified for the provision of synchronization of real-time stream traffic as w...
متن کاملMACSE: A generic connection establishment protocol for multimedia communication residing at the OSI application layer
The multiple association control service element (MACSE) described in this work is a new connection establishment protocol for the application layer of the OSI reference model (OSIRM). The objective of the protocol is efficient establishment and control of multimedia associations among multiple spatially dispersed users. MACSE defines a new OSI service to support the communication requirements ...

Networking can be done in a layered manner. To reduce design complexities, network designers organize protocols. Every layer follows a protocol to communicate with the client and the server end systems. There is a piece of layer n in each of the network entities. These pieces communicate with each other by exchanging messages. These messages are called as layer-n protocol data units [n-PDU]. Al...

Standards have an important role to play in development of multimedia. It is important for the commercialisation of multimedia that standards are agreed for the representation and interchange of multimedia. It is also important that existing standards are adopted where possible to allow multimedia to be integrated into the current generation of systems. However, currently OSI standards do not t...
